Term 1 - Rivers: how do rivers change our landscape?
Our learning this term is all about rivers - specifically understanding the formation of rivers, the importance and impact on the local environment as well as understanding the water cycle.
In Geography, we will be learning about the journey of rivers- from source to mouth, historic and modern uses we have for rivers as well as exploring safety measures when rivers flood. We will develop on from our Year 3 learning, practising using maps and atlases to identify rivers around the world as well as locally.
In RE, our topics this term are:
Domestic church – Family: people - looking at ancestors and the legacy they leave for us, including understanding Jesus’ family tree.
Baptism/confirmation – Belonging: called - exploring signs and symbols of baptism, promises and responding to God’s call.
In Maths, our learning this term focuses on Place Value and Addition and Subtraction. We will be focusing on recognising numbers up to 10,000 numerically and in words, partitioning numbers and representing numbers in Roman numerals. Within addition and subtraction, we will add and subtract up to two 4-digit numbers, including more than 1 exchange.
In Science, we are learning about states of matter – reversible and irreversible changes. We will be comparing and classifying materials, measuring temperature and learning what happens when materials are heated and cooled.
In Art, we shall be continuing to explore the theme of rivers, with a focus on the artist Claude Monet and impressionist art styles in watercolour. In DT, we learn further about the engineering cycle, working to a brief, exploring types of bridges and how structures can be strengthened.
In English, we begin the term by developing an incredible mythical creature who lives in a river and writing a character description, revisiting descriptive writing tools from our previous learning. We will explore the creature’s habitat, creating a setting description before developing our non-fiction writing, creating an explanation text focusing on caring for our mythical creatures.
