Term 6 - Romans: how did the Romans shape Britain?

Our learning this term is all about Roman Britain - specifically understanding the impact the Romans had on Britain and how this has influenced modern day.

In History, we will begin our learning contextualising the era, recalling pervious learning from Year 3 about Iron Age Britain as well as comparing our previous learning of world civilisations (Ancient Egypt). Our learning will focus on the Roman army, how they were constructed, what made them successful and how Roman culture then influence Britain. We will also explore the impact of the Roman invasion and settlement within our local area.

In RE, our topics this term are:

Reconciliation – Inter-relating: Building bridges where we will learn about the meaning of Sin and examination of conscience before learning about eh different elements of the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Universal church – World: God’s people where we learn about ordinary people doing extraordinary things, the call for us all to be saints with a focus on individuals who lived God’s word and did extraordinary things living out their mission.

In Maths, our learning this term focuses on time, shape, statistics and position and direction. In our time topic, we will be learning to tell the time and convert between the 12-hour and 24 hour clock as well as converting between analogue and digital time. In our shape unit, we learn about angles and the properties of triangles, quadrilaterals and other polygons including lines of symmetry. The statistics unit explores handling data, revisiting interpreting pictograms and bar charts before learning to read, interpret and draw line graphs. The final unit of position and direction begins with recapping describing positions and directions before exploring using co-ordinates and to describe, plot and draw points and shapes, leading on to translating shapes on a grid.

In Science, we are learning about animals including humans – learning first the characteristics of living things before learning to classify animals based on their traits.

In Art, we shall be continuing to explore the theme of the Ancient Romans, with a focus on the artist Antoni Gaudi and mosaic art styles. We will have a workshop with our resident artist, creating our own mosaic tiles. In DT, we understand and apply the principles of a healthy diet, knowing that to be active and healthy, food and drink are needed to provide energy for the body.

In English, we explore writing features which can support characterising direct speech within a narrative. We will continue our learning how to modify nouns and modify verbs using adverbs/adverbials of manner and place. We will learn how to use ellipses to indicate a pause in speech or a change in thought as well as investigating levels of formality and writing colloquial language. We will draft short sentences to build tension and learn how to construct a sentence using an embedded participle phrase or clause.
